Organizing or participating in a volleyball tournament has never been easier, thanks to Volley World App. One of the standout features of our platform is the seed system, a method for ranking teams based on their skill levels to ensure balanced and fair matchups.

The two types of seed system

1. Manual seed system

If you’re an organizer who prefers to use your own data, or you have a specific ranking system in place, the manual seed system lets you assign seeds to each team according to your criteria. You have full control over the seeding process.

2. Volley World App seed system

For those who value automation and data-driven fairness, the app calculates seeds based on each player’s past performance:

Level & reliability — each player’s Volley World level is multiplied by their reliability score.
Scale factor — this number is then multiplied by 100 to create a seed score.
Team seed ranking — we aggregate these scores to assign a seed ranking to each team.

Example calculation

For a team with Player A (level 5, reliability 0.5) and Player B (level 6.5, reliability 0.7):

Team seed = (5 × 0.5 × 100) + (6.5 × 0.7 × 100) = 705

The organizer can then choose between two seeding options:

Automatic seed — one top-seeded team per group.
Pod-system seed — each group gets a strong, medium and weak team, ensuring balanced competition.

Maximum transparency

For total openness, players can always check which seed system is being used in the event. Plus, once the matches are set, an automated email is sent out with the tournament schedule and a detailed Excel sheet explaining the seeding.
